06.03.2006 - Olav Etverk was elected as the new chairman of the RMK supervisory board 29.09
The State Forest Management Centre (RMK) supervisory
board, at its 28 February meeting, elected vice chancellor for natural
protection and forestry at the Ministry of the Environment Olav Etverk, as its
new chairman.
Olav Etverk graduated from the Estonian Agricultural
Academy (EPA) in 1990 with a specialty in forestry. In 1991-2000 he worked as a
forester in various forest districts, and in 2000-2001 as the chairman of the
RMK internal audit commission. From 2001, he has worked at various posts in the
Ministry of the Environment.
The previous chairman of the supervisory
board, Andres Onemar, submitted his resignation from the office and the
supervisory board in connection with his commencement of work as the Development
Manager at RMK. In the interim, the duties of the chairman of the supervisory
board were performed by the vice chairman, Estonian University of Life Sciences
(EMÜ) professor and chairman of the environmental protection commission at the
Academy of Sciences, Urmas Tartes.
In addition to the
aforementioned persons, the following persons belong to the supervisory board:
Minister of the Environment Villu Reiljan, Tallinn University of
Technology docent Kostel Gerndorf, advisor to the Minister of the Environment
Karel Rüütli, Riigikogu (Parliament) members Küllo Arjakas and Rein Randver,
Centre of Forest Protection and Silviculture director Kalle Karoles, and Ivar
Sikk, head of the Ministry of Finance State Budget Department.
“RMK has
a competent and active administration, in co-operation with whom we can perform
our functions well” said Olav Etverk. “And because there is an excellent
development schedule already in place, no significant changes need to be made in
the near future".
RMK, the manager of the state forests, is a profit-making state agency which is founded on the basis of the Forest Act and whose primary goal is the preservation and effective management of state forests. RMK grows reforestation materials, organises forest work, and deals with the sale of forest and timber, as well as game management. In addition, RMK creates trails and forest vacation opportunities at recreation areas, and develops environmental awareness. RMK preserves and manages nearly 40% of Estonia’s forests.
