14.08.2006 - Representatives of 28 countries to compete at 27th World Logging Championships 29.09
Participants are coming from 28 countries to compete at the 27th World Logging Championships to be held in the Republic of Estonia from 16 to 19 August. Most of the European countries, including all the Baltic States, Benelux and the Scandinavian countries (excluding Iceland), will be represented. Ilya Shvetsov from Russia is also expected to attend and defend his title.
The competitions will take place in southern Estonia, near the Otepää town. The participants will live in a building complex by the competition venue, which will hopefully help also create a pleasant atmosphere during free time from competition.
The competitions are going to take place in exceptional circumstances because the past few months have been unusually dry in Estonia, resulting in a high fire danger in the forests. According to the Estonian Rescue Board, there have been over 6000 forest and landscape fires, the largest of which covered nearly 1000 hectares. In several areas across Estonia, local governments have completely prohibited entry into forests because of the increased fire danger.
The first participants will already arrive in Estonia on 15 August. The World Champion will be declared in the evening of 19 August.
