09.11.2007 - The State Forest Management Centre presented the handbook of cultural heritage 29.09

On 9 November, in Tartu, the State Forest Management Centre (RMK) presented the book “Väike pärandkultuuri käsiraamat” introducing Estonian cultural heritage.

Almost 40 people participated in the project launched in the autumn of 2005. In cooperation with local people, local governments and other interested groups, more than 5000 cultural heritage sites were mapped in four counties in Estonia.

The authors of the book are: Lembitu Tarang, Kristiina Hellström, Rein Kaljuvee, Jürgen Kusmin, Triin Neljandik and Maire Raid.

“Everything that stores our history, traditions and lifestyle is cultural heritage. Keeping it adds value to the land and dignity to the land owner. The authors of the book wish to teach people how to notice and appreciate the cultural heritage sites,” project manager Vaike Pommer explained.

The project was funded from the INTERREG IIIA programme of the European Regional Development Fund. Co-funded from Estonia by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and RMK, the latter also being the leading partner of the project. The Ministry of the Environment participated in the project as a partner.

RMK will give the book as a present to all national libraries in Estonia. The circulation of the book is 3000 copies, which will be given away for free.

RMK is a profit-making state agency established by the Forest Act, the main goal being the economical and efficient management of the state forest. RMK grows reforestation materials, organises forest works, is engaged in the sales of forest and timber, and the upkeep of wild animals. In addition, RMK provides opportunities for hiking in nature and resting in the forests at recreation areas, and shapes awareness of nature. RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
In 2002, RMK was awarded ISO 14001 certification and the FSC economic forestry certification. For the first time in Estonia, the FSC certification for the RMK was extended till the year 2012.
