15.02.2007 - RMK gets Management Board and new Supervisory Board Chairman 29.09
At its meeting of 13 February, the State Forest
Management Centre (RMK), acting on the proposal of the Chairman of the
Management Board Ülo Viilup, approved members of the Management Board
into office and determined their spheres of responsibility. RMK has a
three-member Management Board pursuant to the new Forest Act that
entered into force at the beginning of the year; the Management Board
will assume office as of February 15.
Raivo Võlli, heretofore RMK’s Director of Forest Management, was
approved as the member of the Management Board in the field of forest
utilisation. In addition to the management of forests in order to
obtain wood, he will, from now on, also be responsible for recreation
and hunting management.
The former chairman Olav Etverk, heretofore the Deputy Secretary
General on Nature Protection and Forestry at the Ministry of the
Environment, was approved as the member of the Management Board in the
field of forest cultivation. In addition to nursery management,
reforestation and forest planning, his sphere of responsibility will
now include ensuring the preservation of landscape, objects of cultural
heritage and protected natural features.
Olav Etverk submitted a request for resignation of
the position of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RMK to the
Supervisory Board on 31 January this year; the government approved it
on 8 February. On 7 February, Etverk announced his resignation of the
position of the Deputy Secretary General at the Ministry of the
Environment.
The previous Deputy Chairman Urmas Tartes, an EMÜ professor and
Chairman of the Nature Protection Committee of the Academy of Sciences,
was elected as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RMK. The
election of the new deputy chairman will probably be decided on during
the next meeting, at the end of March.
In addition to the aforementioned, the Supervisory Board also includes the Minister of the Environment Rein Randver, a docent of the University of Tartu Kostel Gerndorf, adviser to the Minister of the Environment Karel Rüütli, Head of the Forestry Department at the Ministry of the Environment Marku Lamp, Members of Riigikogu Villu Reiljan and Küllo Arjakas, Director of the Centre of Forest Protection and Silviculture Kalle Karoles and Head of the State Budget Department at the Ministry of Finance Ivar Sikk.
State forest manager RMK is a profit-making state agency established under the Forest Act, the main function of which is the economical and effective management of state forests. RMK grows reforestation material, organizes forest work, sells forests and timber and organizes the upkeep of wild animals. In addition, RMK creates possibilities for exercise in nature and recreation in forests and develops people’s awareness of nature. RMK manages about 38% of Estonia’s forests.
