29.08.2007 - Baltic Foresters’ Societies consider heritage culture an essential part of forestry 29.09

The main topic of the Conference of the Baltic Foresters’ Societies held in Saaremaa from 23 to 25 August was heritage culture in forests. The event at Mändjala drew more than 70 people from Estonian, Latvian and Estonian societies of foresters. 

Investments in heritage culture in Estonia, heritage plant communities, and Estonian forestry were discussed at the conference on 24 August. Latvian and Lithuanian representatives shared the experience of their countries.

The annual conference of the Estonian Society of Foresters was supported by the Environmental Investment Centre; the event was conducted by the State Forest Management Centre in cooperation with the Estonian Society of Foresters. The agenda and presentations are available at www.metsaselts.ee

The annual conference tradition of the Baltic Foresters’ Societies dates back to the time before WW2; the tradition was revived in 1990.

The Estonian Society of Foresters is a non-profit organisation founded in 1991; its objective is to unite foresters as well as forestry and wildlife enthusiasts who share common views about the development of Estonian forestry and the use and protection of forests.

The State Forest Management Centre (RMK) is a profit-making state agency whose main duty is the sustainable and efficient management of state forests. The RMK grows young trees, organises forestry work, sells forest and timber and organises taking care of game. In addition to that, the RMK offers hiking and holiday possibilities in recreational areas and promotes wildlife awareness. The RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
Since 2002, the RMK holds an ISO 14001 certificate and an FSC sustainable forestry certificate. The RMK was the first entity in Estonia whose FSC certificate was extended till the year 2012.
