“Last
year, RMK experienced an increase in profit, as in addition to the sales volume
increasing by a tenth, the sales price of felled timber also increased by more
than 3%,” explained Aigar Kallas, Chairman of the Management Board of RMK,
adding that larger felling volumes also brought about more reforestation work
and the record-breaking number of 18.4 million new trees were planted in state
forests.
In 2013, RMK sold 3.2 million cubic metres of felled timber at the average price of 44.3 EUR/m3 (in 2012: 2.8 million m3 at the average price of 42.9 EUR/m3) and 0.2 million cubic metres of wood chips at the average price of 28.3 EUR/m3 (in 2012: 0.3 million m3 at the average price of 34.1 EUR/m). The sales volume of felled timber increased by 11.8% in a year’s time, the price of timber increased by 3.3% and the price of wood chips fell by 16.9%.
In 2013, 18.4 million new trees were planted in state forests (2012: 17.6 million). Of the planted trees, 9.8 million were pines, 7.6 million spruces and 1 million birches. RMK grows 75% of the forest plants in six open-air plantations across Estonia; the remainder are produced by AS Eesti Metsataim.
In 2013, RMK performed reforestation works on 6,628 hectares in the state forest. In addition, maintenance of reforested areas and cleaning of young growth was performed on 39,012 hectares and improvement cutting of middle-aged forests was performed on 10,345 hectares. Regeneration cutting was performed on a total of 8,714 hectares.
RMK is a profit-making state agency established under the Forestry Act, aimed at the sustainable and efficient management of the state forest. RMK grows reforestation materials, organises forestry works, is engaged in the sale of forest and timber and organises game upkeep. Additionally, RMK establishes opportunities for nature walking and forest holidays in recreation areas, in Estonia’s five national parks and almost 40 other protected areas, and shapes nature awareness. RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
