Fuel oil contamination has been found on the beaches of Vainupea, Kunda, and Käsmu. When walking on the beach, please be cautious and ensure that children and dogs do not come into contact with the sticky substance. Please report larger contaminated areas to the state information hotline at 1247.
This rest stop is located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, close to the eastern border of Lahemaa National Park.
The name Vainupea has been given here to the cape, the beach, the smallest river in Northern Estonia, the historic village, the harbour, the chapel, and the cemetery closest to the sea in Estonia. The village includes Vaindloo Island, the northernmost point in Estonia, and known as a resting place for fishermen and seal hunters. The first written record of Vainupea beach dates back to 1499, when it was part of the Karula Knight’s Manor, in Haljala Parish. Vainupea has been known as a summer resort since the 19th century. Immediately on the shore of the sea is a sharp-pointed erratic boulder – the Kaarnakivi boulder. With a height of 5.5 metres and a circumference of 24.5 metres, the stone ranks as the 65th largest in Estonia.
