You can enjoy a picnic and camp next to the historical Oksa forest keeper’s granary. For the undemanding hiker, the cosy old granary offers shelter, providing a place to rest in case of rainy weather or fatigue. Hikers on the Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla hiking trail can leave their wet tents to drain here and take shelter in the granary, with its sturdy roof and walls, instead. This is especially pleasant in the case of strong winds, when tent walls tend to flap.

The Meiekos study trail takes you along the former Kõpu-Jõesuu dam, offering an opportunity to explore the floodplains of the Tõramaa River estuary and experience one of Soomaa’s heritage landscapes. Attractions along the trail include meadows, a variety of plant species, beautiful riverbanks, and gnarled oak trees. The former path is grassy and, at times, soft. Those who pay close attention will notice native trees, old apple orchards and wild hedge plants along the path. A century ago, there was a thriving village in Tõramaa. At that time, the area was filled with meadows, pastures, and rye fields. Each farm had its own dairy cows, horses, sheep, and pigs. There were mansion-sized houses, cellars filled with food, skiffs full of young people, and bridges across the river. Today, some ruins and meadows remain, where beef cattle graze. Their grazing prevents the last remaining shrubs from becoming established and thus provides a habitat for the abundant meadow species found here. The trail is one of the best places to see butterflies and admire Siberian irises. To get back to the car park at the start of the trail, you must either walk along Kõpu-Jõesuu Road or return along the already walked trail.

Sights

Semi-natural landscapes, different plant species, scenic river bends, ancient trees, and old farmsteads, recognisable by the preserved foundations and fruit trees.

The Ingatsi study trail offers a view of the most characteristic features of Soomaa at once. The first half of the trail winds through a mineotrophic swamp forest with flowing water, where water-loving black alders grow best. Relatively few mineotrophic swamp forests with flowing water remain as a result of drainage. If you time your visit right, you can even take a canoe ride here, as the high water level extends to the start of the trail. The high water only extends so far, because it soon meets the highest bog slope in Estonia and possibly in Europe. Once you reach the top of the bog slope, you will find yourself in Kuresoo, Estonia’s largest bog massif. An observation tower has been erected on the bog slope. A boardwalk then takes you between the bog pools. There are several resting places along the trail where you can take a break. There is also a ladder at the edge of the bog pool, allowing you to safely go for a swim. The second part of the trail winds through a wet forest floor and ends at a gravel road near the Karuskose forest keeper’s house. From there, you can see the Raudna River. Walk along the road to return to the car park.

Kuresoo bog, Karuskose semi-natural landscapes, floodplain forest.
