You can enjoy a picnic and camp next to the historical Oksa forest keeper’s granary. For the undemanding hiker, the cosy old granary offers shelter, providing a place to rest in case of rainy weather or fatigue. Hikers on the Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla hiking trail can leave their wet tents to drain here and take shelter in the granary, with its sturdy roof and walls, instead. This is especially pleasant in the case of strong winds, when tent walls tend to flap.

The beginning of the trail runs for about one kilometer through a drained swamp forest, where drainage has caused the peat to decompose and exposed the root collars of trees. Further on, the ground gradually begins to rise, and you will reach the edge of Estonia’s largest bog massif – Kuresoo bog. The landscape of Kuresoo is diverse. Here you can find muddy peat hollows, bog pools, and bog islands with large pine trees. It was here that composer Mart Saar found inspiration for his mystical choral works, organ pieces, and solo songs. In honor of his life and creative work, a sunrise concert is held every year on a bog island as part of the Suure-Jaani Music Festival. The trail eventually loops back to the starting point. Along the trail, there are two rest areas by the bog pools and a bog stage.

Öördi bog is the only bog in Soomaa National Park where a remnant lake of a former large glacial lake has been preserved on the edge of the bog. Water regime restoration works are taking place at the edge of the bog, which is why the water level in the forest is higher than one would expect. After heavy rainfall, the woodchip trail may occasionally become submerged. Those who have wellies and are not afraid of water will be rewarded with a beautiful bog lake. However, it is not worth jumping into the lake, as there are a lot of pine roots and trunks under the surface of the water. It is, however, worth admiring the lake at sunset, especially while geese are migrating. The trail leads to the lake and two viewing platforms, and then back again. True nature lovers do not slosh around Lake Öördi, because extremely rare and sensitive bird species live there, and their nests area disturbed by the presence of people. Bicycles and tents should be left at the Öördi forest hut at the start of the trail.
