The Kassinurme Hills were highly valued during the national awakening of the 19th century, a time when the Kaarepere volunteer firefighters held various social gatherings there. Kassinurme was a popular outing destination in 1925–1940, the excursion train bringing hundreds of people there on summer Sundays.
In 1989, the Jõgeva County Forest Society along with volunteers interested in culture, nature and ancient history started to tidy up the ancient Vaiga Hillfort. The overgrown hillfort and grove were cleared and stairs were built to access the stronghold hill. A stage was built at the foot of the stronghold in addition to a swing, a tepee and a campfire site in the foreyard. Jõgeva Sports Club established skiing, hiking and health trails on the hill. Since then, the Jõgeva Forest Society has held joint cultural heritage days in the hillfort.
The first fragment of the Kassinurme ancient fort was finished by 2004 and during the same year, MTÜ Keskmaa Ordu held its first live action role-playing game “Royal wedding in Arthedain”. Kassinurme has become a popular destination for role-playing games thanks to its diverse landscapes, nature and historical background.
