Ingatsi study trail (4.3 km)
The Ingatsi study trail offers a view of the most characteristic features of Soomaa at once. The first half of the trail winds through a mineotrophic swamp forest with flowing water, where water-loving black alders grow best. Relatively few mineotrophic swamp forests with flowing water remain as a result of drainage. If you time your visit right, you can even take a canoe ride here, as the high water level extends to the start of the trail. The high water only extends so far, because it soon meets the highest bog slope in Estonia and possibly in Europe. Once you reach the top of the bog slope, you will find yourself in Kuresoo, Estonia’s largest bog massif. An observation tower has been erected on the bog slope. A boardwalk then takes you between the bog pools. There are several resting places along the trail where you can take a break. There is also a ladder at the edge of the bog pool, allowing you to safely go for a swim. The second part of the trail winds through a wet forest floor and ends at a gravel road near the Karuskose forest keeper’s house. From there, you can see the Raudna River. Walk along the road to return to the car park.
