The trail starts at the Käsmu cemetery and chapel, running through the rocky forest to Matsikivi and on to Vana-Jüri, before returning along the village road. In the cemetery you will find the names of almost all the famous captains from the nearby captains’ village, including those who died far from home. The trail passes through an area of land covered in migrating stones, which were left behind when more than 400 ha of continental ice melted. This is the largest concentration of stones in Estonia. The largest stone is Eremiit or Matsikivi, at 14.7 metres in circumference and 4.7 metres in height.
From the end of Vana-Jüri you can see Lobineeme in the east – the north-west tip of the Vergi peninsula, Saartneeme or Devil’s Island in the north-east, and Palganeeme, the north-west tip of Käsmu.
The earliest records of Käsmu date back to 1453, when it was used as a fishing ground. Käsmu later became known as the village of sailors and shipmasters. The Maritime School, established on the initiative of local coastal-dwellers and seamen, operated from 1884 to 1931. Almost every family had a captain or mate in it. The bright, so-called ‘captains’ houses’ stand out on the village road. The Käsmu Maritime Museum provides an excellent overview of the village’s history.
