Nõmmeveski campfire site
The campfire site on the right bank of Lahemaa’s largest river, the Valgejõgi River, is a suitable stopping place for passers-by on RMK’s Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla hiking route. The campfire site offers a wonderful view of the river from the 20 metre high shore. Downstream from the campfire site, the river breaks through the cliff, forming the 1.2 metre high Nõmmeveski Falls. While the waterfall itself is not particularly high, the steep canyon walls of the river valley create a powerful impression. Large bursts of bedrock that have broken apart can be seen on the banks of the valley and in the river. The sparkling yellowish water suggests that the river is fed by iron-rich bog waters. The large concrete ruins belong to the Nõmmeveski hydroelectric power plant, which was completed in 1927 but destroyed by fire in 1964. Growing deep in the valley is a bank forest characteristically found at the base of the coastal cliffs of northern Estonian.
