Ruunaraipe campfire site
Foot-and-mouth, a severe animal disease, is currently circulating in Europe and also poses a threat to animals in Estonia. Your help is needed to prevent animals here – sheep, cattle, goats, and other ungulates – from becoming infected. We ask that you please follow some important recommendations.
The Ruunaraipe dunes were formed around 14,000 years ago, when the shoreline of the Baltic Ice Lake was located here. These special dunes stand out in the middle of Soomaa’s swampy landscape and are some of the highest inland dunes in Estonia. The slender pine forests are popular places to gather mushrooms and berries. After filling your basket with rufous milkcaps and Russula, you can empty the contents of your picnic basket at the campfire site and its barbeque grill. If you wish, you can also pitch a tent on the sand. Hiking enthusiasts can walk on sand dunes that are several metres high and through the pine forest. However, you cannot drive an ATV, car or other motor vehicle off road, as this damages the delicate and flammable vegetation growing on the dunes. Let’s make sure that it stays this way for future visitors.
