Soontagana campsite’s observation tower (1.5 km from the parking)
The observation tower is located 1.5 km from the parking lot of the Soontagana campsite. From the tower, which is on the bog island of Avaste Nature Reserve, you can have the view to the Soontagana hill fort and the beautiful heritage landscape. This place has been a refuge for people from conquerors for several centuries. Only a very secret path through the bog led to the hill fort. The road was under water and only people who knew could find their way to the fortress. In the 13th century, there have been several forays to Soontagana - Swedes, Germans with Livonians and Pskov Russians. Now meadows, old farms and stone fences surround the fortress. The history of two of the farms in known back 22 generations.
