Viru bog nature trail (3.5 km)
In connection with the renovation of the parking lot infrastructure of the Viru Bog Nature Trail, there are two portable toilets on the site until its completion.
The trail begins one kilometre from the car park alongside the Tallinn-Narva highway, from the road leading to Loksa. First it runs first through the forest, then through the bog to the small car park on the other side by Old Narva Highway for one and a half kilometres from Loksa road towards Kemba. The 3.5 km long trail through the bog is marked with white and green colours on the trees. It can also be run in a circle. The total distance is then 5.5 km. Starting at the car park by Narva Highway, when you reach the information board at the end of the trail through the bog, turn left onto the branch of the trail which is marked with blue dots on the trees. This will lead you back to the start of the trail as you walk alongside the bog-side dune chain. Information boards explain the formation of peat bogs and their importance for nature and people, as well as the bog plants: marsh Labrador, cloudberries, bog-rosemary, hare’s-tail cottongrass, and insect-eating sundews. Information boards also provide details of the rehabilitation work carried out at the Kemba end of the trail to revive the former peat milling field. In the middle of the trail, there is a gazebo offering views of the entire bog. Wheelchairs and prams can access the observation tower via a ramp. After that, the boardwalk narrows.
Despite the abundance of water, the bog is highly flammable! A glowing spark in the peat can trigger a large fire.
To preserve the vegetation and soil, please only walk along the boardwalk. Riding a bicycle on the boardwalk is prohibited!
Sights
Viru bog is a small beautiful bog with many bog pools. You can learn about bog plants, insects and other small creatures with the help of information boards there. In the end of the trail is a restoration area of a former peat mining field with explanatory boards.
