The trail of forest stories is a fantasy journey from Sagadi Manor to Oandu Visitor Centre - or vice versa. Under the old alder trees, you can read and listen to forest fairy tales and stories about the places along the trail while hiking on the Sagadi alley, on the Tepelvälja village road and in the bright pine forest. With the help of square codes, you can listen to stories in Estonian, English and Russian. A great opportunity for families and groups to discover our folk tales while walking on a nature trail!

Sights

Trips on the forest fairy tails trail can be started from both sides - longer and shorter walks can be made starting from Sagadi Manor and Oandu visitor centre. There are 18 "story books" by the trail, where you can read a fairy tale in Estonian and English or listen to it using QR codes - in Estonian, English and Russian language. Forest fairies, ghosts, the spirit of the water and the snake king, talking animals and birds, hidden treasures and a fern blossom - on the trail you can find out what the folk stories tell about them.
In the village of Tepelvälja, most of the farms have been abandoned during the Soviet era, the fields and pastures have become overgrown and lie uncultivated now. After the village land, a narrow path turns towards Oandu, first along the bank of the river and then through old pine and spruce forests. Walking by the mossy stone fence, you will reach the old tree plant garden of the forest district, where you can still see planted spruce plants growing on the beds. From here, the journey on the Forest Stories trail overlaps with the Oandu Heritage Trail for a while and reaches the former meadows, where old barn barns have been restored. The other end of the trail is on the edge of the yard of Oandu visitor center. The trail is easy to cross, clothing and shoes should be chosen according to the season.

Camping

Oandu campsite (300 m from Oandu Visitor Centre).

Amenities

2 big information boards in both ends of the trail, 18 in A2 format information boards - all boards in Estonian and English, benches, table-benches, partly gravel and partly wood chip path

Parking

Oandu Beaver trail is a kilometre from Oandu towards Altja. Introducing the Altja river valley and its biota, the trail runs along the high slopes of the esker, where scenic views open on the river rapids. The most important inhabitants here are the beavers who have also given the name to the trail. Despite the people on the trail, beavers have always built dams on the Altja river, as the primeval valley offers them perfect conditions for that. The beavers are very shy animals, and you can hardly ever see them. In addition to the beaver dams on the riverbanks, you will also see pointed stumps and felled logs here, and sliding tracks ending in the Altja river.

Sights

Traces of beaver activity—beaver dams, lodges constructed along the riverbank and felled trees—can be seen in the deep river valley.

RMK Sagadi Nature School is an environmental center, which is located in Sagadi Manor in Lahemaa National Park. Our mission statement is a quote by Artur Toom, creator of the first nature reserve in Estonia in 1910. It says: The child who takes nature as a friend, breathes better from the soul. The school is a vital part of the Sagadi manor and is financed mostly by the Estonian State Forest Management Center (RMK).

The purpose of the school is to improve people’s environmental sensitivity, show how nature and humans interact and are interrelated, and to teach students environmentally sound values and responsibility. We believe that learning by doing, using all senses, group work, cooperative study, and teaching by using different methods, are key to students receptivity. Our center is constantly evaluating the curriculum, teachers and methods to ensure a top quality programs.
